Factors that affect skin aging

When it comes to planning a skincare regimen to reverse the appearance of aging, it’s vital  to have a little understanding about the science behind skin aging.

Some factors that contribute to skin aging, including heredity and normal biological processes of the human body, are largely beyond our control, whereas others may be mitigated through lifestyle and habit changes.

As we age our bodies produce fewer new skin cells. There is reduced fibroblast activity. Fibroblasts are the most common connective tissue cells, and less fibroblast activity leads to less collagen and elastin in the skin and less elasticity.

Our skin begin to sag and become dryer and thinner. It becomes less resilient and more fragile and more susceptible to environmental assaults, including pollutants and UV rays.

Wrinkles, lines and age spots begin to appear. Some of the effects of aging are due to the natural, intrinsic process of aging, whereas others are caused and exacerbated by external factors.

Extrinsic Factors that Affect Skin Aging

While some factors are largely beyond our control, there are factors extrinsic to normal biology that we could influence through behavioral changes to slow down and even reverse the effects of aging on our skin.

These extrinsic factors include smoking, alcohol use, excessive sun exposure, sleeping positions and even repetitive facial expressions. Smoking can cause tiny blood vessels in the outermost layers of the skin to narrow, leading to reduction in blood flow, oxygen supply, and delivery of essential nutrients to the skin.

A combination of external factors can manifest over time in increased dryness, reduced resiliency, loss of elasticity, development of wrinkles and irregular pigmentation.

Smoking and UV exposure can produce damaging free radicals that lead to premature wrinkling, hyperpigmentation, and lines. Pollutants, stress, facial expressions, obesity, and gravity all lead to wrinkled, spotted skin.

Characteristics of Skin Aging

As we grow older our skin becomes rougher. Loss of elastin in the skin leads to sagging. Thinning of the epidermis makes the skin become more transparent. The skin loses its resiliency, becomes more fragile, and is easily bruised. Skin lesions such as benign tumors may develop.

Loss of fat tissue underneath the skin in the cheeks, nose, and eye area result in sagging and loosening of the skin, causing the appearance of facial bones to become more pronounced on our cheeks, jaw, temple, and other areas. This is why our eyes tend to appear more sunken as we age. Our nose droops at old age due to loss of cartilage.

Some factors that contribute to premature skin aging may be addressed through lifestyle and habit changes. For instance, changes in diet, physical activity, sleeping position, and facial movements can have significant impacts on our facial skin appearance.

Armed with a basic understanding of the causes, both intrinsic and extrinsic, of skin aging, you can plan an effective skincare regimen to address  issues that are unique to your skin.

Vitamin C

A powerful antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals before they can cause inflammation and damage. Vitamin C helps to minimize the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines and to resurface your skin to appear smoother and firmer by activating the fibroblast cells that make new collagen.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E has soothing anti-inflammatory properties that help promote firmer, brighter, and more youthful skin.  Vitamin E is a potent antioxidant that offers a line of defense against damaging free radicals from UV exposure that attack collagen to cause premature skin aging.

Vitamin B5

Vitamin B5 is an antioxidant that has anti-inflammatory properties to help heal and promote healthier, firmer, brighter, and more youthful skin. It helps keep the skin hydrated by drawing moisture from the air.  It soothes and softens the skin, plumping its outermost layer to reduce the appearance of lines.

Organic Pomegranate Oil

Pomegranate oil is loaded with antioxidants that help reduce age spots and wrinkles. The antioxidants in pomegranate aid in the skin’s ability to get rid of old skin cells on the surface and replace them with new ones, promoting natural exfoliation that leads to healthier, younger-looking skin.

Organic Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is an excellent moisturizer that helps smooth the skin and lock in existing moisture.  Lauric acid, an antimicrobial substance that makes up nearly 50% of the fatty acids in coconut oil, helps fight harmful microorganisms.  Coconut oil can improve skin barrier function and repair, fighting the appearance of aging.

Organic Shea Butter

Rapidly absorbed into the skin, shea butter acts as a “refatting” agent to restore lipids and moisture. Shea butter promotes anti-aging by increasing new collagen production and decreasing breakdown of existing collagen. It also has anti-inflammatory properties to help minimize irritation caused by environmental factors.

Organic Aloe Juice

Aloe is a rich source of antioxidants, enzymes, and vitamins that help protect your skin from harmful UV radiation, repair existing UV damage to your skin, and prevent fine lines and wrinkles. Sunflower oil is an excellent source of vitamin E, antioxidants, and other nutrients that help combat skin inflammation and irritation.  Sunflower oil has emollient properties that help trap moisture inside skin cells to keep them hydrated for a longer period. Sunflower oil is rich in Vitamins A and E which help promote overall skin health.

Organic Safflower Oil

As a topical moisturizer, the linoleic acid in safflower oil helps to prevent flaking and maintain the integrity of the outer layer of your skin. Safflower oil’s antioxidant properties help minimize the appearance of aging by helping to restore collagen lost to environmental factors like UV exposure and free radicals.
